FC Basel coach Murat Yakin sensationally claimed earlier today that Tottenham Hotspur had been in touch regarding the vacant manager's post at White Hart Lane, but refused to divulge further details over a potential official approach.

Spurs relieved former coach Andre Villas-Boas of his duties less than 48 hours ago, following a humiliating 5-0 home defeat at the hands of Liverpool.

Frank de Boer, Glenn Hoddle and Fabio Capello have all been linked with the Spurs post, but Yakin has taken observers by surprise by revealing that he has received interest from Spurs and not rumoured future destination Lazio.

In an interview with Swiss website 20 minutes Yakin claimed: ”I had no contact with Lazio, but with Tottenham, yes.”

Yakin has impressed clubs across Europe with Basel's persistently impressive performances against sides with bigger budgets on the continent, which includes a victory over Spurs on penalties in last season's Europa League quarter-finals.

Basel also managed to beat Chelsea home and away in this season's Champions League despite not qualifying, a feat which has clearly attracted the attention of Spurs chairman Daniel Levy.

Spurs currently have former midfielder Tim Sherwood in caretaker charge as their search for a new coach continues, with his first game at the helm against West Ham United in a Capital One Cup quarter-final tomorrow night.
