Liverpool are flying high right now having played themselves into the position of title challengers and therefore potential title winners.
Sir Alex Ferguson is not gone more than five minutes and the boys from the red half of Merseyside are already climbing back onto their perch.
Sustaining a title tilt is not going to be easy, but Liverpool have certain things going for them however. Firstly, they have no European commitments. The league is Liverpool's only concern this season and it's hard to see them being so high in the table if they had played ten Europa League games for instance.
The second and third things going for Liverpool are the jaw dropping form of Luis Suarez and the team unity that Brendan Rodgers seems to have built. The two are interconnected.
Suarez can only play at his best if everyone else is playing well and Suarez playing well brings out the best in others. See Jordan Henderson's performance against Spurs for an example.
By opening contract talks with Suarez's agent Pere Guardiola, brother of the more famous Pep, Liverpool may well have put these both at risk.
It is well known that in the summer that Suarez was restlessly checking his options and fluttering his eyes at Real Madrid and other continental giants. Opening contract talks half way through the season could easily lead to renewed transfer speculation with the January window round the corner. This sort of media circus would disrupt squad unity harming the performances of both Suarez and the team bringing Liverpool's nascent title challenge to a quick end.
Of course, if the contract talks are wrapped up quickly then the opposite could happen. With the demands both sides are likely to make and the nature of these discussions it is unlikely this will happen.
By opening contract talks now Liverpool are playing a very dangerous game.
