Liverpool may be preparing to swoop for Manchester United and Chelsea target Ivan Rakitic, according to Sports Witness.

The source, citing Spanish website Estadio Deportivo, claims that the Reds are returning with intent to buy the highly-rated Sevilla star, who has a release clause in his contract which stands at a hefty €40million.

Reports only recently emerged concerning the player's links with Atletico Madrid, who are also keen on capturing his services, but it's thought that Brendan Rodgers wants to return for the Croatia international before he agrees terms with another club.

The Reds were linked with the 25-year-old playmaker in the summer, where it was claimed that he was interested in moving to Anfield. Surely now that theory will have been offered even more fuel given Liverpool's exceptional start to the season.

Rakitic will no doubt spark a transfer bidding war in January if he isn't snapped up soon- but if rumours that Sevilla are holding out for a figure close to his buyout clause are proven true, then interest in him may wain.
