Newcastle United are assessing a bid for Inter Milan striker Ishak Belfodil in January, according to the Independent.
The North East side are looking for a replacement for Papiss Cisse who has been massively out of form after an electric start to life in the Premier League.
Belfodil is desperate for regular football in order to be included in Algeria’s World Cup squad next summer but has only been given a handful of opportunities.
“I obviously would like to play more often,” Belfodil told le Buteur. “The World Cup is coming up and I have to be in good shape.”
The Algerian switched from Parma to Inter Milan in the summer after scoring eight and assisting four goals last season in Serie A. Belfodil has started just two matches all season and is hungry for first team action.
Belfodil said: “The transfer window is approaching, so I will talk with the directors and see what’s happening. I am happy at Inter, but Algeria coach Halilhodzic has made it clear that I have to play.
"That's why I'm considering my options. The transfer market could throw up a solution."
The Magpies have a large contingent of French-speaking players so Belfodil would fit into the side with relative ease.
It would also take some of the reliance off of Loic Remy and Yoan Gouffran to score the goals as Newcastle look to strengthen their squad for the second half of the season.
