Chelsea are favourites to sign Inter Milan defender Andrea Ranocchia during the January transfer window, according to the Express.
Jose Mourinho is concerned about the weak defence of the squad which has been unable to keep a clean sheet recently, although they are third in the Premier League standings and have qualified for the knockout stages of Champions League.
Mourinho might also consider offloading Brazilian David Luiz, with Barcelona and Bayern Munich closely monitoring the defender’s situation at Stamford Bridge, while the prospect of a swap deal for Ranocchia and Luiz might be favourable for the Blues.
Contrary to transfer rumours, Ranocchia have been quoted in recent weeks: "Many silly things have been written about me, that I am unhappy and I want to leave.”
”I am just thinking about this shirt and paying back the fans for the affection they have for me.”
But the fact that he is yet to sign a new contract with the San Siro outfit might lead to the possibility of the club cashing in on him early next year.
The Italian defender has had limited opportunities for Inter Milan this term and might feel a January switch would boost his chances of making the Italian squad for the World Cup in Brazil.
Premier League rivals Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham are also showing interest, but reports indicate Chelsea remain the leaders in the race to sign the centre-back.
