Atletico Madrid will rival Arsenal for the signature of Marseille playmaker Mathieu Valbuena, according to Le 10 Sport.
The 29-year-old has been at Stade Velodrome since 2006, but could now leave the Ligue 1 club when the transfer window reopens in January.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is a long-term admirer of the France international, though it is unclear whether or not he is interested in signing Valbuena in the New Year, given his wealth of attacking midfield options currently at the Emirates Stadium.
The club-record signing of Mesut Ozil during the summer has largely appeased Arsenal fans, and now the north London club are focusing on signing a striker, to provide competition for Olivier Giroud.
Valbuena would still represent an excellent addition, and Los Rojiblancos boss Diego Simeone will do well to bring him to the Vicente Calderon.
Reportedly available for €10-12million, Marseille are not opposed to the player's departure, given that he retains aspirations of playing in the Champions League, after the French club's group stage exit this season.
