Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is set to decide between two midfield targets for the January transfer window - Nemanja Matic and Fredy Guarin.
Sky Sports Italy journalist Gianluca Di Marzio reports Chelsea are still keen on Matic despite the flurry of speculation that has claimed Guarin to Chelsea is all but done.
Recent reports have suggested Mourinho has agreed a £15m deal with Inter Milan to bring the Colombian international to Stamford Bridge.
But Di Marzio claims Chelsea will also explore the possibility of signing former-player Matic.
He would be much more expensive - with an estimated £30m valuation he'd be double the price of Guarin - and Chelsea would face competition from Manchester City and Paris St Germain for the Serbian's signature.
The report claims Benfica officials held a meeting with the agent Jorge Mendes before their recent Champions League tie to discuss the interest in the player, with Manchester City reportedly willing to offer Javi Garcia as part of the deal.
Benfica snubbed that proposal, and the report claims there remains a chance for Chelsea to revive negotiations for Matic if their chase for Guarin falls through.
