3. Edwin van der Sar

Edwin van der Sar hung up his gloves in 2011 after helping Manchester United win their 19th league title. He was 40 years old.

The Dutchman started the 21st Century with Juventus, where he didn't enjoy the happiest of spells, before agreeing to join Fulham.

After four years at Craven Cottage, Sir Alex Ferguson opted to bring the ageing 'keeper to Old Trafford. It proved an inspired decision.

He ended up winning four Premier League titles and two League Cups, while he played a crucial role in Manchester United's penalty shoot-out victory over Chelsea in the 2008 Champions League final.
