Chelsea have set their January transfer sights on Manchester United target Andrea Ranocchia, according to reports.

The Daily Star claims Blues boss Jose Mouinho has made the player his number one defender target in the New Year, as he looks to strengthen in a number of key areas.

Indeed, the paper claims the Chelsea manager is chasing six new players to bolster the squad, with Inter Milan star Ranocchia the only defender on the list.

Despite a relatively solid start to ‘the special one’s’ second spell at Stamford Bridge, the Blues are yet to hit top form in the Premier League this season.

They've also looked a little shaky at the back, and with constant speculation over the future of David Luiz in west London, it would be no surprise to see a new centre back arrive at Chelsea.

The Blues face competition for the 25-year-old's signature however, with a reported £15million price-tag appealing to a number of clubs.

Manchester United are one of those also reported to be keen on a player, who has 12 full international caps for Italy.

David Moyes missed out on a number of high-profile targets in the summer, with Marouane Fellaini the only significant Red Devils addition in the window.

And, their frailties have been exposed on a number of occasions this term, prompting the Manchester United manager to take a look at adding a defender.

Ranocchia would give the Scot another option at Old Trafford, but it could be a battle to land the player in January.
