The Nets travelled to Philadelphia with aspirations of gaining momentum to give them hope of reaching the play-offs in April.

Due to their poor start to the NBA season, they find themselves quite a margin off the top of the Eastern Conference and were in need of some points over the December period.

However, it did not quite go as planned. They lost their latest game 121-120 against a just as poor Philadelphia 76ers. For a team hoping to be play-off challengers, it should have been a win.

They are currently 9-17 and that sort of form does not depict that of a play-off worthy team.

Brook Lopez added to the heartache, affliction and misery that has surrounded the team and for that matter Brooklyn for this side of the season.

Lopez is the Nets' center and the No. 11 is one of the stars that together have not been able to live up to their demanding expectation.

It was discovered on Saturday that Lopez has fractured the fifth metatarsal in is his right foot.

The injury adds to the shade of misery in Brooklyn and it seems all the expectation at the start of the NBA season back in October has only damaged the team and the expectation has seemed all too much for the Nets.

The gargantuan off-season trades of Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce made it seem inevitable that the Nets were to challenge at the top, but for now; obviously not and the huge expectation has created a negative atmosphere.

If the team didn't carry so much expectation on their shoulders then time to build chemistry would only improve them as a unit and let the stars build a formidable unit.

The individuals the Nets possess equipped with chemistry could be a team to challenge the Miami Heat at the very top of the NBA, maybe a few seasons down the line they may just be able to do that.

On paper the Nets are on of the best teams in the division and could still qualify for the play offs subject to some extreme luck.

They had a perfect chance to capitalise on some easier fixtures in late December starting off by beating the 76ers.

Brooklyn did not take their chance and have found themselves in a sticky situation and without some force of momentum soon in the next few fixtures including a tough test against high flyers Indiana Pacers, the Chicago Bulls and the Milwaukee Bucks, they could be all but out of play off contention.

Can the Nets still reach the play-offs? Only time will tell, but leaving it any longer introducing consistency and they could be out of contention way before April.

Maybe we could be waiting until next year for the Heat to be challenged, Nets have the quality to do so along with some other sides and if Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett can completely settle in at Brooklyn we could be looking at the next domineering team in the NBA.
