Crystal Palace's resurgence came to an almighty halt after they were convincingly beaten 3-0 by Newcastle, they and Sunderland remain in the bottom three along with the west Londoners.
Tottenham came back from 1-0 down to beat fellow rivals Southampton 3-2 as interim boss Tim Sherwood looked to undo the damage caused by Andre Villas-Boas.
There were also wins for Liverpool, Everton, Stoke and Manchester United, with all four teams appearing now to find their form in the league and certainly ones to watch.
The busy period starts here, with all teams in the league now expected to play three games over the next nine days, so anything could happen.
