Liverpool are plotting a player-plus-cash offer to bring Oldham Athletic defender James Tarkowski to the Premier League.

The Daily Star claims Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is considering a £2million bid for the 21-year-old, as well as one player from the club.

Tarkowski has built an impressive reputation at Oldham, graduating from the club's academy to become a first team regular in recent seasons.

And, his form for the Latics has not gone unnoticed in the higher levels of English football, with the paper reporting that 14 teams from the top two divisions have sent scouts to watch the young defender.

“I want to keep him. He is a good player and hopefully he will not go,” said Oldham boss Lee Johnson.

It might prove difficult however, with clubs like Liverpool pursuing the player's signature.

Tarkowski is out of contract in 19 months, and if the centre back refuses to pen a new deal, the club will have to consider selling to a suitor like the Reds or risk losing him for next to nothing in compensation.

Rodgers is a 'huge fan' of the player, the paper claims, and if Liverpool were to land the player, he wouldn't be alone as a young Englishman fighting for first team opportunities at Anfield.

Jordan Henderson is currently in the fold on Merseyside, whilst John Flanagan, Martin Kelly and Raheem Sterling are also involved on a regular basis.
