West Ham United footballer James Tomkins has been in trouble over the weekend after swapping the boots for the boxing gloves, .
The defender was charged with assaulting a police officer at Sugar Hut Village in Essex, a night club very popular with celebrities.
Tomkins, who played earlier in the day during the Hammers 3-1 defeat against Manchester United, was charged with assault, being drunk and disorderly as well as resisting arrest.
The West Hame star was taken into custody early on Sunday morning after security staff refused to allow the 24-year-old into the club.
A police spokesman said: "Officers were called by security staff from the Sugar Hut Village shortly before 00:30 GMT on Sunday following reports of a disturbance."
He will appear at Basildon Magistrates' Court on 9 January.
The central defender is reported to earn around £35,000-a-week and has made 137 senior appearances since coming through the club’s famous academy system.
The arrest came on the same day that the East Londoners released their Christmas Advent Calendar on Youtube which features Tomkins and Jack Collison promoting sensible drinking over the festive period.
