£18m Chelsea star in talks with Barcelona

Chelsea’s on-loan keeper Thibaut Courtois is in talks with Barcelona, according to Spanish newspaper Marca.

The Madrid-based paper claims Atletico Madrid have been informed that the Belgium international – currently mid-way through his third season on loan at the Vicente Calderon from Chelsea – is in negotiations with Barca to replace Victor Valdes next summer.

The Spain stopper is out of contract at the end of the season, and Barcelona want the £18m-rated Courtois to replace him.

Atletico Madrid are also keen to buy the keeper from Chelsea permanently, and the report claims Jose Mourinho is much more willing to consider a sale to Diego Simeone’s side.

In fact, Chelsea will not consider selling Courtois to Barcelona, a club they consider to be a Champions League rival – despite the fact Courtois is interested in a move to the Nou Camp.

Chelsea reportedly would consider a bid from Atletico, but they would want at least £18m – a steep price for a 21-year-old goalkeeper, even one as good as Courtois.

With Petr Cech the established number one at Stamford Bridge, reports earlier this season claimed Courtois wanted assurances over his first-team chances before agreeing a new Chelsea contract.
