Manchester United and Arsenal have been dealt a blow ahead of the January transfer window as midfield target Yohan Cabaye will be forced into staying at Newcastle until the end of the season.
The Metro claim Newcastle have a gentleman's agreement with Cabaye that will see the Frenchman stay at St James' Park until the summer.
Manchester United and Arsenal were both reportedly keen on signing the France international in January.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger made a move for Cabaye in the summer - but was unable to convince Newcastle into selling his fellow countryman.
Both Manchester United and Arsenal were said to be prepared to offer Newcastle around £20million in order to tempt the north-east outfit into selling their prized asset, however any hope of landing the midfielder have been dashed.
Manchester United boss David Moyes is now likely to turn his attention to the likes of Koke and Marco Reus, while Wenger may now focus his attention on signing a forward.
