Tottenham want Manchester United defender on loan

Published Add your comment

Tottenham Hotspur have approached Manchester United over the possibility of taking Alexander Buttner on loan in January, with a view to signing him on a permanent deal next summer, reports the Daily Mirror.

The 24-year-old has been deemed surplus to requirements by the Premier League champions, having made just 19 appearances since joining the club from Vitesse Arnhem in a £5million deal in 2012.

Red Devils boss David Moyes has made no secret of his desire to sign a new left-back, to challenge Patrice Evra for a starting spot in the Manchester United side, and is believed to be willing to let Buttner leave Old Trafford.

Tim Sherwood has identified the Dutchman as a possible solution to Spurs' ongoing problems on the left side of defence, with Jan Vertonghen injured and Benoit Assou-Ekotto currently on loan with Queens Park Rangers.

The north London club hope to sign Buttner on an initial loan deal until the end of the season, and, if he impresses during that time, could earn a permanent switch to White Hart Lane.
