Manchester United boss sets striker goals target
David Moyes has told Danny Welbeck how many goals he wants him to score
David Moyes has praised Danny Welbeck for his recent run of goalscoring form but warned the striker that this can only be the beginning if his season is to match up with the Manchester United boss' expectations.
Welbeck scored the only goal of the game as the Old Trafford club overcame Norwich City in a dull game at Carrow Road, making it four goals in four games for him and seven in all for the season.
Moyes welcomed the 23-year-old's form as he is currently without main centre-forward Robin van Persie and is struggling to keep Wayne Rooney fit for consecutive matches, though has told Welbeck he must do more.
Last season the England international managed just a solitary strike and so could be vulnerable to thinking that this season is already a success, but Moyes told him to do away with any such thoughts and set him a target for the season.
“With the second half of the season to go, he should be certainly looking to score 20 goals," he told reporters after the win.
"We need him to do that because when you don’t have Wayne and Robin then you need people to step up to the mark.
“In quite a few of the games recently he has done that for us. It is important and we have said to him we are trying to keep his finishing up. I think he can keep his efforts up, get his levels up even better.
“I think Danny has responded. He’s saying, ‘Hey, this is quite good, I’m beginning to score goals and getting recognised for that as well’.”
