It is not often a transfer window arrives where the majority of prominent clubs are in desperate need of quality reinforcements, but that is the case this January. Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United all desire acquisitions of some repute as they bid to strengthen their respective pursuits of glory.

The Premier League champions failed miserably during the summer transfer period as they attempted to recruit a creative midfielder, and doing so before the winter deadline would appear to be imperative.

Manchester United manager David Moyes attempted to bring numerous players to Old Trafford during the summer months and they still remain in need of a renowned playmaker.

Arsenal, meanwhile, need another striker to help sustain their challenge for the league title given that Olivier Giroud is the only out-and-out centre-forward at the disposal of Arsene Wenger.

Chelsea, likewise, find themselves desperate for another goalscorer before the close of the window given the failings of their current crop so far this season. Samuel Eto'o, Fernando Torres and Demba Ba have only six goals between them and a change is in order.

This January could become one of the biggest spending on record as the Premier League's powerhouses prepare to splash the cash, and here are the six most expensive signings that could happen within the next month...
