Chelsea: Predicted line-up v Southampton

Published Add your comment

Buoyed after their 2-1 home win over Liverpool on Sunday, Chelsea make the trip to Southampton on New Year's Day.

The Blues could move to the top of the table if they secure maximum points at St Mary's and other results go their way.

However, Jose Mourinho will be without several of his key players for the visit to the south-coast club, who have dropped down to ninth place in the Premier League table in recent weeks.

Midfielder Frank Lampard is out with a muscular injury, right-back Branislav Ivanovic suffered a knee injury against Liverpool, while David Luiz is suspended after picking up a fifth yellow card.

Brazil international Ramires will return to the fold after serving a one-match ban - and he could be partnered in central midfield by John Obi Mikel, who has been struggling with illness in recent days.

Meanwhile, Cesar Azpilicueta will shift into Ivanovic's right-back spot, with Ashley Cole set to replace the Spaniard at left-back.

Mourinho must also decide whether to stick with Samuel Eto'o, who scored against Liverpool, or play Fernando Torres upfront.

Chelsea's predicted line-up: Cech; Azpilicueta, Cahill, Terry, Cole; Ramires, Mikel; Hazard, Oscar, Willian; Eto'o.
