As Jacques Kallis played in his final test match, South Africa produced a destructive performance to thrash India by 10 wickets.

The 38-year-old all-rounder announced on Christmas Day that he would retire from Test Cricket after this match against India, causing South Africa coach Russell Domingo to admit: "I'm not sure we will ever see another player of that stature very soon."

As Kallis stepped out for what would prove to be his final test innings, fans and players alike applauded him for what has been a sensational test career. Kallis did not get caught up in the emotion of the occasion as he scored a quite beautiful 45th test hundred as South Africa would register a daunting total of 500, 166 runs clear of India's first innings total.

India managed to score 334 but would have been disappointed as an incredible Dale Steyn spell reduced them from 198-1 to 334 all out with Steyn ending the innings with figures of 6-100.

However, despite South Africa's demanding lead, the match hung very much in the balance at the end of the third day with India 68-2. India's strong batting lineup meant that, should the top order all produce, then India would easily be able to set South Africa an unreachable total.

However, South Africa's equally strong bowling attack proved too strong for India as, once again, spearheaded by Dale Steyn's three wickets, South Africa tore all bar Ajinkya Rahane to pieces. Rahane fell four short of his maiden test hundred as India's last wicket and India were 223 all out - just 57 runs ahead.

Kallis led the triumphant South African team off the field but did not need to bat again as openers Smith and Alviro Petersen knocked off the 58 required runs without losing a wicket in twelve overs as South Africa extended their lead at the top of the world rankings.
