Luis Suarez is the name on every football fan's lips in recent weeks. Why? Because of the storm he's caused in the Premier League, of course.
The Reds striker has been in scintillating form after returning from his 10-game ban which he incurred for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic, netting 20 times in 15 Premier League appearances for the Merseyside club - seven more than main competitor Sergio Aguero.
This may sound like a significant contribution already by Suarez, but the thing that makes this feat remarkable is that the Liverpool marksman missed the first five games of the Premier League season, therefore getting to being the top goalscorer in the league was much more of a challenge for Suarez than his competitors.
He has also provided five assists for his Liverpool teammates, showing his proficiency in being a team player as well as leading the goalscoring charts. So how do Suarez's stats compare to top strikers in other leagues? It's time to find out.
As far as stats are concerned, Suarez's goal to game ratio is one of the best in Europe. He has an average of 1.35 goals per game, much higher than Zlatan Ibrahimovic (0.83) and Robert Lewandowski (0.69), and only really comparable to Diego Costa who himself has shone this season and has an average of 1.19 goals per game.
Suarez also notably has the second most assists from the names mentioned above, only Ibrahimovic has higher (6). Last but not least, Suarez has the most man of the match awards out of the four mentioned.
Shockingly enough, Suarez and Costa both have better goal to game ratios than four-time Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi this season, with Suarez having done it in an arguably tougher league.
Does all of this count as evidence for Luis Suarez being the best striker in the world? It's too early to decide.
It could be argued that Suarez hasn't performed in the bigger matches this season, therefore his goal tally at the end of the season will be the true judge of whether or not the Liverpool hitman has hit his peak or whether his performance in the first half of the season was just a burst of exemplary form.
