Liverpool could face a stiff battle with fierce rivals Everton for the signing of Chelsea full-back Ryan Bertrand.

According to the Daily Mirror, the Reds want to sign the England international this month but could have competition for his signature from their Merseyside foes if they eventually sell Leighton Baines.

24-year-old Bertrand, who has been with Chelsea since 2005 but has frequently been loaned to Championship clubs and is believed to be valued at around the £8 million mark, provides dependable backup at Stamford Bridge but remains firmly behind the likes of compatriot Ashley Cole and Cesar Azpilicueta in Jose Mourinho's pecking order.

Liverpool, who leapfrogged Everton to reclaim fourth spot in the Premier League table following Wednesday's comfortable 2-0 victory over Hull at Anfield, are reported to be on the hunt for new signings in January with the squad noticeably suffering from a lack of depth of late.

Left-back appears to be an area of concern for manager Brendan Rodgers, with French international Aly Cissokho struggling to impose himself and Jose Enrique still watching on from the sidelines with a long-term knee injury.

Everton, who have also enjoyed a promising opening half of the 2013/14 season under the popular figure of Roberto Martinez, do not appear to have any immediate need to add a new left-back to their own squad.

However, with champions Manchester United reportedly lining up a fresh new year bid for the impressive Baines, that could well change.
