Chelsea and Manchester United are the preferred option for Barcelona in a money-spinning friendly in February.
The Spanish giants are due to play in Qatar next month as part of their sponsorship agreement with ‘Qatar Sports Investment’, according to Sport, and would like to meet one of the Premier League giants.
The Daily Mail goes on to report that Chelsea are the ideal opponents, continuing the club’s rivalry with manager Jose Mourinho.
Whether the Blues would be willing to take part in a fixture ahead of the Champions League last 16 matches remains to be seen, but there are sure to be financial rewards for Roman Abramovich if the fixture does take place.
Chelsea have been in fine form domestically, with the Stamford Bridge outfit well in the title mix. And, a trip around the world in the middle of the season might not be the best option for ‘the special one’ and his side.
Current EPL champions Manchester United are also ‘under consideration’, the Mail claims, in a potential meeting of domestic powerhouses from England and Spain.
Things are a little bit different for the Red Devils following a disappointing start to the season however, and David Moyes will surely want his side fully focused on the stuttering title defence after replacing Sir Alex Ferguson in the summer.
That said, Manchester United are one of the most followed teams in the world, and a trip to Qatar could help expand the global brand even further.
It’s a classic case of football over marketing, but if the financial rewards of such a match are seen as too good to turn down, then you could see either of these side taking part in a mind-boggling match-up next month.
