Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata was the subject of a formal transfer enquiry from Napoli yesterday as Azzurri boss Rafael Benitez hunts down a reunion with the Spanish star in Serie A, according to the Mirror.
Mata's position at Stamford Bridge has become increasingly strained in the last few months, with Blues boss Jose Mourinho consistently preferring Oscar, Willian and Eden Hazard in advanced midfield positions.
The 25-year-old has completed 90 minutes in the Premier League just twice this season and that peripheral role has been enough to alert a number of Europe's top clubs, including Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan and Manchester United.
Napoli are the first team to make contact with the Blues though, put on red alert by Mourinho's admission that his door is open to discuss Mata's future after he was substituted just 53 minutes into a 3-0 win over Southampton on New Years Day.
The Blues are thought to be adamant that Mata will not join a direct Premier League rival, but will reluctantly allow him to leave for the continent if a formal transfer request is matched to a bid of around £30m.
