Borussia Dortmund Striker Robert Lewandowski has agreed to join Bundesliga rival Bayern Munich in the summer, ending all speculation about any possible January transfer as well as delivering another crushing blow to Die Schwarzgelben.
The soon to be out of contract 25-year old Polish striker is understood to have signed a 5-year deal at the Allianz Arena.
The deal comes as no surprise to many but is sure to raise questions about the judgment of the Dortmund hierarchy. Rather than receiving some fee they elected to have the Pole play out the final year on his contract and leave for free, effectively forfeiting around £50 million. That decision is exacerbated by their current position at fourth in the table.
This transfer is sure to tilt future results of Der Klassiker furthur in Munich's favor. For Munich this is the first piece of business done in the New Year but continues the 2013 trend of acquiring another one of Europe's greatest talents.
Along with the acquisitions of Pep Guardiola and Mario Gotze, Bayern really do just keep getting stronger. Any semblance of parity in the Bundesliga has surely taken a severe hit.
Dortmund are set for a tumultuous 2014 with the loss of yet another stalwart but Lewandowski is an ideal fit for Guardiola’s system because of the tactical versatility he offers. While currently deployed as a centre-forward he is not unfamiliar with the deeper lying number 10 role.
His transfer to Bayern could also end Pep Guardiola’s experimentation with Mario Gotze as his false nine and it could pave the way for Mario Mandzukic to join Arsenal.
Dortmund will certainly be in the market for a striker this summer. As many have learned we should not doubt their capacity to reload. But how long can keep hemorrhaging this calibre of talent to a close rival and stay competitive?
