With 2014 just getting going, GMS felt it was a good time to take a look back at the season so far to assess some of what have been the most crucial moments.

As most sides in Europe's five big leagues tend towards the lone striker system these days, creative midfielders have become increasingly important to attacking stats and are, arguably, the key players in the modern game.

However, one way of working out how important a player is to his side's attacking play is looking at how many key passes he plays in a match - key passes being passes that create a goalscoring opportunity.

Using statistics compiled by the excellent WhoScored.com, GMS took a look at those players that have the highest average number of key passes per game to deduce how crucial they are to their team's attacking play.

This statistic can also help shed a bit of light on how clinical their attackers are, so it's no surprise that key passes are often seen as an important aspect of statistics by clubs.
