It has been reported that Arsenal target Maxime Gonalons is close to joining Napoli.
The 24-year-old, who has become a pivotal defensive figure for Lyon, is continuously being linked with a move away from his current side, with Arsenal and Napoli both being interested in the French international.
Though Arsenal were the Premier League’s best team in 2013, and currently lead the way in the title race, Wenger will undoubtedly be looking to add depth to help keep up their good form during what will be an extremely demanding second half of the season.
Gonalons has given no indication towards wanting a move away, however, the chance to work under fellow countryman Arsene Wenger could prove to be the decisive factor.
29-year-old Mathieu Flamini, who has been terrific for the Gunners since returning to the club from AC Milan in the summer, is the only real defensive option.
Although Mikel Arteta, Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere have all played beside Flamini in a defensive position this season, there is no doubt that all of the three are better when playing a more offensive role.
Gonalons certainly wouldn’t walk straight into the team, but his ability to play either in defense of midfield should increase his playing time.
The addition of the Frenchman would cast doubts over Francis Coquelin’s career at Arsenal - the 22-year-old hasn’t shown enough potential to be considered as a future star.
Gonalon could be available for around £10 million which for a promising 24-year-old is a bargain in the current transfer market, and potentially an opportunity that may be too good to miss.
