Arsenal star to link up with former Premier League boss?

Former Premier League boss Rafael Benitez is keen on bringing Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen to Serie A, according to reports in Italy.

The Arsenal captain has been linked with a move away from the Emirates Stadium as he has struggled for games this season.

Vermaelen has spent the majority of the current campaign on the substitutes' bench as he has fallen behind fellow Arsenal stars Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny in Arsene Wenger's pecking order.

The 28-year-old, who joined Arsenal from Ajax in July 2009, has made just three Premier League starts so far this season.

Vermaelen will be desperate to get some game-time under his belt between now and the end of the season as he will have aspirations to start in Brazil for Belgium next summer.

And former Liverpool manager Benitez is willing to give Vermaelen the platform to impress Belgium national team boss Marc Wilmots.

Reports suggest the Spanish tactician has drawn up a four-man wish-list, with Arsenal's Vermaelen said to be his number one transfer target.
