Manchester United & Liverpool dealt blow in £9m transfer chase

Liverpool and Manchester United have fresh competition in the race for Basel starlet Mohamed Salah, with Russian giants Zenit St Petersburg ready to steal a march in the race for one of Europe's best young players by lodging a January bid, according to talkSport.

Salah has been strongly linked with a move to the Premier League in the last few weeks, with both Liverpool and United thought to be weighing up a £9m offer for the Basel winger.

The Reds in particular continue to be persistently mentioned in connection with a January bid for the Egyptian international, although manager Brendan Rodgers has publicly denied those claims in the past week.

Salah has the kind of attacking versatility that would provide both Liverpool and United with a different dynamic in the final third, able to play on either flank or in advanced central position behind a lone striker.

Rodgers may now need to move fast if he still wants Salah to provide a fresh attacking option in the final third, with Zenit ready to steal a march on the English duo by registering a £12m offer before the transfer window closes.

Basel are yet to receive a concrete offer for their top young talent, although with Europe's top clubs now circling the Swiss side's ability to keep hold of a proven performer in the Champions League looks questionable.
