A month of transfer madness midway through the season often does strange things to Premier League managers, all desperate to give their campaigns a shot in the arm with a sprinkling of star quality.

The first week of 2014's transfer window may have been a surprisingly quiet affair but don't let that facade fool you, top sides are courting blockbuster signings should the opportunity become available.

Arsene Wenger, David Moyes and their adversaries should be careful though, with the last decade littered with examples of ill-advised forays into the transfer market.
