Manchester United have submitted a formal offer, believed to be around €18m, for Real Madrid left-back Fabio Coentrao, according to Diário de Notícias journalist Gonçalo Lopes.
The 25-year-old is reportedly keen to leave the Bernabeu and would seriously consider a move to Old Trafford.
United boss David Moyes came close to signing the Portugal international, who signed for Real Madrid from Benfica in 2011 for a reported £25m fee, on a season-long loan deal at the end of the summer transfer window.
However, the Red Devils missed out on the full-back after Real Madrid failed to sign Guilherme Siqueira from Granada.
Moyes and the Manchester United hierarchy will need to work hard to secure the left-back's services, however, as Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti is believed to be keen to keep the player at the club.
Lopes goes on to report that Ancelotti prefers Coentrao over Real Madrid's other left-back Marcelo, which could potentially scupper United's hopes of signing the Portuguese this month.
