Evening Report: January 8
Lionel Messi, Xabi Alonso, Jackson Martinez, Jolean Lescott and more...
Manchester United manager David Moyes praised the club's supporters following their latest defeat on Tuesday night. The Red Devils were beaten 2-1 by Sunderland in the first leg of their Capital One Cup semi final at the Stadium of Light, but an under pressure Moyes was quick to extend his thanks to the travelling fans for sticking with him and the club.
Lionel Messi is likely to make his comeback for Barcelona after manager Gerardo Martino confirmed that the Argentine will be in the squad for Wednesday night's Copa del Rey clash against Getafe. The 26-year-old has missed two months with a hamstring injury but should be fit enough to feature at the Nou Camp.
Premier League title hopefuls Chelsea have once again been linked with a move for Real Madrid star Xabi Alonso. The former Liverpool midfielder is out of contract at the Santiago Bernabeu during the summer and it is believed that Jose Mourinho could swoop for the cultured Spaniard this month.
Arsenal could turn to Colombian marksman Jackson Martinez if their loan bid for Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata does not succeed. The Gunners are on the lookout for a new striker following the knee injury that will see Theo Walcott sidelined for at least six months but it is believed that Arsene Wenger is reluctant to sign a permanent replacement in the January window.
Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott will not be leaving the club any time soon, according to manager Manuel Pellegrini. The England international, who has been used sparingly this season, has been linked with moves to both Tottenham and West Ham but Pellegrini has insisted that Lescott remains an important player at the Etihad Stadium.
