After months of preparation and debate, Steve Yzerman formerly announced the roster for Team Canada on Tuesday. The roster includes the following 25 players:
Goaltenders: Roberto Louongo, Carey Price and Mike Smith
Defence: Jay Bouwmeester, Drew Doughty, Dan Hamhuis, Ducan Keith, Alex Piertrangelo, PK Subban, Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Shea Weber
Forwards: Jamie Benn, Patrice Bergeron, Sidney Crosby, Jeff Carter, Jonathan Teows, Chris Kunitz, Rick Nash, Patrick Marleau, Patrick Sharp, Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry, Matt Duchene, John Tavares, and Steven Stampkos.
Looking at this lineup, one thing seems obvious: This team has got speed and experience. 11 of the players selected have already won a gold medal. Unfortunately for Yzerman, this selection was no easy task.
Several notable omissions from the squad included Claude Giroux, Martin St. Louis, Joe Thorton and Eric Staal.
The omission of Martin St. Louis was probably the most difficult. He is currently the scoring leader for the Tampa Bay Lighting.
Also, many thought that since Yzerman is in charge of Tampa Bay, that the St. Louis selection was a given.
However, this was not the case for St. Louis this year. I believe Yzerman made the right call by leaving the veteran off the roster.
What surprises me is the selection of Jeff Carter over Eric Staal. I believe Eric Staal is a much better two way player then Jeff Carter.
Also, I would’ve taken Brent Seabrooke instead of Marc-Edouard Vlasic due to Seabrooke’s past success and experience. Nevertheless, the team is complete and certainly has a lot of potential for success in Sochi in February.
I can’t wait to see which goaltender will get to play the first game of the tournament against Norway on February 13th.
Also, it will be interesting to see if the sometimes reckless and risky play of PK Subban will help or hinder the team. I can’t wait to see what lineups Head Coach Mike Babcock will come up with.
