Just when it looked as if Dwight Howard's career was settling down into something resembling normality after two eventful years, his girlfriend - Christine Vest - created controversy this week with something as simple as her choice of garment.
Following a failed year as as Los Angeles Laker and his subsequent departure from Staples Center, Howard has a somewhat strained relationship with the franchise's legions of fans - something that was presumably not helped by Vest's decision to wear a hoodie bearing the words 'Laker Hater' during the team's visit to face the Houston Rockets at Toyota Center on Wednesday night.
The Rockets, the team Howard opted to join instead of signing a max-extension in LA this summer, eased to a 113-99 victory over Mike D'Antoni's depleted crew but Vest stole some of the limelight with her choice of attire.
Taking to Twitter, Vest apologised for any offence the hoodie - which had Howard's name featured on the back - had caused, but clearly felt her actions were in jest.
"Y am i the only person not allowed to wear a "#hater" hoodie lol u people are taking it waaaaay too seriously lol" she said.
"I sincerely apologize to all if the Laker fabs that i've clearly hurt in some way by wearing a fun "laker hater" hoodie to the game."
Howard, who looks to be slowly returning to his former glory under the tutelage of Kevin McHale in Houston, scored 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds against his former team, while All-Star teammate James Harden went off for 38.
The Rockets, who currently lie fifth in the Western Conference with a record of 23-13, return to action on Friday night with a trip to face Paul Millsap and the Atlanta Hawks.
The Lakers, meanwhile, who are cut adrift in 13th while enduring somewhat of a backcourt injury epidemic, face their cross-city rivals, the Clippers, on the same evening.
