Though Jose Mourinho's Chelsea currently sit in 3rd place, it's fair to say they haven't been their rampant best this season.
With ageing and misfiring players in his squad, Jose Mourinho- despite what he may say- will be on the look out for potential transfers next month with a view to challenging his side's rivals to the Premier League crown.
The two key positions to be strengthened are the holding midfielder position and center forward position.
Chelsea have brimming talent in the attacking midfield region; which is evident by the fact that a player like Mata is made sit on a bench with no place in the squad. The same cannot be said it the centre of the park.
Lampard has been in stunning form, but has not adapted particularly well to the role as holding midfielder. Michael Essien isn't the same player he was before and it's clear to see age is getting to the holding midfielder.
An even worse situation is the attacking front of the team; the strikers haven't scored a single away goal in the calendar year 2013. This goes to show Chelsea's regrettable form on their travels this season, where they have failed to beat some of the bottom placed teams.
Jose Mourinho may go for a Colombian duo of Freddy Guarin and Jackson Martinez in the transfer window. Guarin could be a prized asset to the Blues while Jackson Martinez would be a lethal addition to the frontline.
Chelsea have also been linked to a £32million double deal involving Lazar Markovic and Nemanja Matic of Benfica. With Benfica facing financial issues, they may decide to sell the two top players for the right price. Chelsea may face competition with Nemanja Matic from Manchester United who are trying to sign a midfielder as well.
Perhaps facing their toughest test yet in order to win the league and with increased competition from the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool, Chelsea need to add quality to their squad before it's too late.
