Chelsea must strengthen their squad again in the summer transfer window if they are to build a team capable of challenging on all fronts.
Despite having one of the strongest squads in the Premier League, the Blues are relatively weak in certain areas compared to their rivals and Mourinho will undoubtedly be looking to sure up any gaps in their armour.
Chelsea will be looking to bring in players across the pitch and the rumour mill is already churning out an assortment of reputed links to the brightest footballing stars on the planet.
The goalkeeping position appears to be one of internal controversy. Thibaut Courtois, who is currently on loan at Atletico Madrid, was named by talkSPORT as the fourth best goalkeeper in the world and he has certainly been making headlines in Spain.
Chelsea have reportedly had to fend off interest from Barcelona, while the Belgian has publicly stated that he has no interest in joining the Catalan giants.
Petr Cech has been a superb servant for Chelsea and recently equalled Peter Bonetti's club record of 208 clean sheets. However, Chelsea cannot afford to rest on their laurels with a young, world class goalkeeper on their hands and so I think Courtois will be between the sticks in September 2014.
Defensively, Chelsea are very strong. Cahill and Terry have formed a superb partnership and Chelsea have only conceded 18 goals in the Premier League, one less than leaders Arsenal. Rumours persist regarding the supposed departure of fan favourite David Luiz, according to Goal.com.
Kurt Zouma and Eliaquim Mangala have been touted as potential replacements but I can only see one defensive transfer happening for the Europa League champions. Luke Shaw, according to reports from the Daily Mirror, is on his way in a deal that would see Ryan Bertrand go the other way.
Despite accomplished performances from John Obi Mikel in the holding role, I personally don't feel the Nigerian offers enough in terms of distribution. Ramires has been superb for Chelsea this season but the Blues are crying out for another holding midfielder.
With Frank Lampard in his last contracted season, I believe Chelsea already have the answer sitting in front of them. David Luiz is an exceptional, and currently wasted, replacement. His distribution of the ball is superb and he is strong enough to match Mikel.
He has been disciplined defensively and I feel he would be a good option for Mourinho to explore. With Xabi Alonso choosing to extend his contract with Real Madrid until 2016, this could well become a reality.
The striker conundrum at Chelsea is, and will continue to be, a headache for fans. Torres is far too unpredictable to truly be relied upon, and he is far from the player Chelsea bought for £50m in January 2011.
With Samuel Eto'o and Demba Ba also misfiring, I can't believe Mourinho isn't looking in this transfer window. Diego Costa is the most pertinent link although there would be no sense in going for him this window as he would be cup-tied for the Champions League.
Wayne Rooney rumours continue to circulate as Manchester United's form deteriorates. However, due to the timing of the window, it is likely that Chelsea will have to live with the current crop until the end of the season.
A name to remember is Patrick Bamford, who has scored 14 goals in 23 appearances on loan to MK Dons this season. He has been moved to Derby and will certainly be one to watch.
