Success at club level largely equates league titles and silverware in cup competitions, but fans of giant sides across the globe enjoy comparing which team would reign deserves to be considered the very best on the planet.

With that in mind the International Federation of Football History and Statistics has compiled a list featuring every top-flight team in the world that is sure to ignite debate, with the top 100 chosen based on their results in every single competitive match played in either league or cup throughout a full calendar year.

On the surface Bayern Munich look a shoe-in for success given their record-breaking calendar year which featured trophies galore, but on this scale they face a worldwide fight to be named the team of 2013, while some of European football's leading lights are spectacularly snubbed

Here we countdown the IFFHS study and get to the bottom of which team performed above all their contemporaries over the last 12 months.
