Manchester United will finally sign long-term transfer target Ezequiel Garay from Benfica this summer for a fee believed to be in the region of £8m, according to The Metro's recall of a story from Portuguese publication A Bola.
Garay has been a consistent feature of the Old Trafford rumour mill in the last 12 months, with United actively seeking to sign a long-term successor in central defence as uncertainty over captain Nemanja Vidic's contract situation rumbles on.
The 27-year-old has reportedly done enough in recent seasons at Benfica to earn the admiration of both Red Devils boss David Moyes and former manager Sir Alex Ferguson, which has kept the transfer chase alive despite interest from Spanish giants and Garay's former club Real Madrid.
Benfica have stayed stubborn in their bid to keep the Argentine international, but with the centre-back's contract up next summer that stance will have to change this summer if they are to secure a fair price for his signature.
United are ready to pounce and will meet Benfica's valuation as Moyes begins the lengthy process of putting his own players in place at the Theatre of Dreams, with defensive stalwarts Vidic, Patrice Evra and Fabio all out of contract this summer.
