Arsene Wenger's pursuit of attacking reinforcements has reportedly led Arsenal to Julian Draxler, and the Premier League leaders could make a formal approach for the Germany international in the coming week or so.

Goal.com reports that the Gunners have identified Draxler as a potential acquisition following the long-term injury sustained by Theo Walcott, with Wenger believing the 20-year-old could be transformed into a centre-forward.

It remains to be seen if Draxler, who tends to operate from the left-flank, is capable of moving into a more advanced central role, but the young German certainly has goals in him. Last season he scored 13 times, while he has found net on five occasions this term.

Schalke moved last summer to ensure they had some security with regards to Draxler by inserting a £40 million release clause into the new contract he signed at the end of the last campaign. So, if Arsenal are serious about signing him, a sizeable fee would have to be outlaid.

Arsenal will have been given hope, however, after Schalke moved to sign Sidney Sam - a possible replacement - and sporting director Horst Heldt conceded they may lose Draxler.
