Five of the greatest: Disallowed goals (1)

Published 1 Comments

Cheick Tiote is the latest player to fall foul of a contentious refereeing decision, after the Newcastle United midfielder's wonder-strike was wrongly ruled out in the Premier League on Sunday.

With the Magpies trailing 1-0 against Manchester City, the 27-year-old unleashed an unstoppable left-footed half-volley from the edge of the box, which ripped through the crowd of players in the box, and into the top corner.

The St James' Park celebrations were short-lived, however, after referee Mike Jones disallowed the equalising goal, adjudging Yoan Gouffran - who was stood in an offside position when Tiote struck the ball - to be interfering with play, by acting as a distraction for City goalkeeper Joe Hart.

The decision prompted an angry reaction from Newcastle boss Alan Pardew, who made his feelings well known to the fourth official, and visiting manager Manuel Pellegrini, following a heated touchline altercation.

City went on to win the game 2-0, thanks to a 90th minute goal from Alvaro Negredo, and in doing so moved back to the top of the Premier League table, but the main talking point remains the controversial decision to chalk off Tiote's superlative strike.

We'll never know how the match might have played out, had Newcastle gone in level at the break, though you can guarantee that Pardew will argue that his side could - and should - have got something from the game.

In light of the Ivory Coast international's effort that was cruelly cancelled out, GiveMeSport picks out five other brilliant disallowed goals.
