Reigning GP2 champion Fabio Leimer feels he deserved a shot at Formula 1 in 2014.

However, after former Lotus reserve Davide Valsecchi became the first GP2 champion not to earn a F1 race seat following his triumph in 2012, Leimer is set to miss F1 altogether this season.

Swiss newspaper Blick reports that in the wake of Leimer’s failure to capture even a reserve role in F1, his already small backing from Rainer Gantenbein has gone.

The 24-year-old is understandably disappointed at the lack of interest shown in him.

“From a sporting point of view I deserve it,” he said.

Indeed only Caterham has yet to confirm it’s line-up for 2014 and should a GP2 driver from yesteryear not be chosen it would mark the first time that no driver from the so-called ‘feeder series’ of F1 would fail to make the move up.

Currently only GP3 champion Daniil Kvyat and Formula Renault 3.5 champion Kevin Magnussen are making the move up to F1 in 2014 and that is also down to being part of the young driver program of the team’s they are moving to.

Last year McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh slammed the quality of drivers in GP2 which has become known for over-aggressive driving and silly crashes.

Instead Whitmarsh pointed to the series of which his newest driver Kevin Magnussen raced and became champion in 2013, Formula Renault 3.5, as being a “much higher quality championship than GP2″.

Red Bull too have fallen out of favour with the series with the head of the young driver program there Dr. Helmut Marko claiming it was “too expensive”.

“It costs EUR 5 million per driver (in GP2), while in GP3 it (the cost) is 600,000,” he said.
