Sport tends to be one of the few things capable of reducing a grown man to tears, as John Terry and Paul Gascoinge can surely testify.

Terry was reduced to a sobbing wreck after Chelsea were condemned to defeat in the final of the Champions League almost six years ago, while Gascoigne turned on the waterworks at the 1990 World Cup.

However, it is not just the players who are overcome by emotion following particular games, goals and incidents, with fans feeling the pain equally or even more so than the professionals themselves.

A young West Ham fan become something of a minor celebrity when he was spotted becoming more distraught following each goal scored in the mauling against Nottingham Forest, and the club have since offered him a complimentary ticket to apologise.
