Ramirez was suspended for 50 games during the 2009 season for use of a female fertility drug, commonly used in conjunction with steroids.

In 2011 Ramirez was informed that MLB intended to suspend him a further 100 games for a second PED usage.

The two-time World Series winner decided to retire, rather than face the suspension.

In the 2011-12 off-season, Ramirez agreed to halve his suspension to 50 games in order to play again.
