Tonight sees the FIFA Ballon d'Or being handed to the best footballer in the world; either Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi or Franck Ribery.
It also sees the announcement of the FIFPro World XI, a team of players voted for by their peers.
All three of these honours are massive within the world of football, individual awards don't come bigger than the Ballon d'Or, being a member of the FIFPro World XI shows how highly your peers rate you and winning a Puskas award is something worth boasting about.
However, I feel as though the number of awards on offer is too narrow. I'm not calling for it to be something on the same scale as the Golden Globes (the Golden Balls... ?), but even just one more award would be an improvement.
Players like Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta have been vital for Barcelona in recent years, especially Pep Guardiola-era Barcelona. In 2010, Iniesta and Xavi came second and third, respectively, to Barcelona team mate Lionel Messi. In 2011, Iniesta came third. In 2012, Xavi came third.
Both players have always been close to the top prize, but never quite made it. And are never likely to, with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo continuously trying to best each other.
That's why I feel a "Lifetime Achievement Award"-style honour should be up for grabs, particularly for older players who can no longer compete for the Ballon d'Or but are still exceptional players. Players who have contributed positively to football, highly decorated players and legends would all be up for the award.
It would give older players an incentive to keep playing to their full potential as well, rather than disappearing east or west of Europe in order to secure one final payday.
Immediately, I think of players like Xavi, Iniesta, Andrea Pirlo, Francesco Totti, Gianluigi Buffon, and more. All of them were, and are still, incredible players who contribute positively to their clubs (and some to their countries). Their contributions to the beautiful game should not go unnoticed.
Music and film awards recognise their all-time greats at award ceremonies, so why shouldn't football?
