Marco Fu is through to the quarter-finals of the Dafabet Masters, after edging out Judd Trump 6-5 at Alexandra Palace.

Fu was making his first appearance in the tournament since reaching the final three years ago,and worked hard to force his way through.

He will now face the winner of the match between Ding Junhui or Shaun Murphy in the last eight.

Two bad misses in the opening frame proved costly for Trump – the first a straight sitter, the second was frame ball which he cut too thin. From there, Fu pulled off a great pot along the cushion and cleared to draw first blood on the black.

However ‘the Ace in the pack’ made amends in the second frame after another stray miss earlier on, as he produced a brilliant shot to develop the safe red on his way to levelling the match.

The world number four was then in total control of the next as a break of 87 put him in front, before his opponent edged a very scrappy 55-minute fourth.

The Australian Open winner then retook the lead with a magnificent 138 clearance, before Trump was again levelled after winning the safety exchange in frame six.

A run of 120 put the 24-year-old back in front at 4-3, but the world number nine grinded out the next two frames to move one away from victory.

Trump eventually came through a tense tenth frame with a 101 clearance, but missed a black off the spot in the decider, and Fu took full advantage with a break of 78 to seal his quarter-final berth.
