Benfica’s Nemanja Matic is in west London for a medical, ahead of a £21million move back to Chelsea.

The 25-year-old left the Blues back in January 2011, being valued at around £3million in a deal that saw David Luiz come to England.

Matic has been high on manager Jose Mourinho’s shopping list for some time, with the likes of Michael Essien having not made a valuable contribution of late.

While Chelsea’s record of goals conceded (19) is joint highest for the season with Arsenal and Everton, Mourinho may feel that he needs a player of the Serbian’s quality to give the defence some extra protection.

However, the 6ft 4in defensive midfielder can still get forward and score some decent goals, notably his volley against rivals Porto last season that saw him nominated for the recent Ballon d’Or Puskas Award.

Chelsea plan to recoup of the transfer fee by selling Belgian midfielder Kevin De Bruyne, who looks set to join German side Wolfsburg.
