Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan is focusing on a return from back injury, rather than any proposed exit, according to FourFourTwo.com

The German international has not featured for Dortmund since the opening day of the season, having injured his back in August on international duty.

The 23-year-old has been a key fixture for Dortmund, featuring 84 times in just over two seasons at the club. But his injury at the start of this season has limited his playing time this term.

Usually deployed as a central midfielder, Gundogan has received praise for his passing and technical ability. During Dortmund's Champions League campaign last term, he was tipped to be one of the best central midfielders in world football.

The German has been linked with a £24 million move in the near future, which could be a bargain when he is playing at full capacity. Manchester United and Real Madrid were said to be interested in acquiring his services during this transfer window.

But for now, the young midfielder is focusing on regaining his fitness and place in the Dortmund side. Die Borussen have slipped to fourth place in the Bundesliga and are having to work with an injury-ravaged squad. The return of Gundogan will be a huge boost to manager Jurgen Klopp.

"My priority is my quick recovery. Nothing is decided yet. Borussia is my first point of contact." Gundogan told Sport Bild.

"I'm trying to be healthy and bring my performance on the pitch. This is important and a top priority for Borussia and for me."
