Benfica midfielder and Serbian international Nemanja Matic has signed for Premier League giants Chelsea.
The fee agreed between the two clubs is €25 million which is well short of the player’s reported buy-out clause of £37million.
Matic is said to have insisted that the Portuguese club push through the transfer as soon as possible.
The 25-year-old midfielder arrived for a medical on Wednesday morning at Cobham Training Ground and completed the move by signing a five-and-a-half-year deal that would keep him at Stamford Bridge till 2019.
The Benfica ace had said earlier this week: ”Yes, it was my last game(against FC Porto over the weekend).
"I want to thank all the people at the club and all the supporters.Benfica will be forever in my heart.”
He left Chelsea in the 2011 January transfer window when he was included in a cash-plus-player deal to land David Luiz from Benfica. Matic was then valued at £5million.
He has developed immensely under the guidance of manage Jorge Jesus and became an integral part of Benfica at Estadio da Luz in the last three years.
This will be his first time working with Jose Mourinho who was not at the club when he signed for Chelsea in 2009,nor when sold to Benfica in 2011.
Mourinho rates him highly and believes he will bring stability to the midfield linking the defence and attack.
An aggressive tackler by nature, his eye-catching skills and exceptional talent to retrieve the ball from the opposition will likely make him a stand-out performer for the Blues.
The 6 ft. 4 in. tall Serbian has 22 appearances for Benfica in all competitions and already scored three goals this season.
He averages 2.7 tackles and 1.7 interceptions(per match),with a high pass success rate of 83.2%.
He will be given the number 21 jersey to play for the London based outfit.
The Premeira Liga Player of the Year 2012-13 has nine international appearances for Serbia, and will be a key player for Chelsea as they aim to win the Premier League title they last won in 2009-10.
