GMS Academy member Karabo Mdluli picks five underrated players...
When Fernandinho came to Manchester City from FC Shakhtar for £35 million, many thought it was far too much for a 29-year-old. However he has now become one of the best players in City’s team, and he doesn’t get as much recognition as the likes of Yaya Toure. He’s been like a silent assassin for City, he quietly controls the midfield and has proven a valuable acquisition.
4) Marek Hamsik
The Napoli player is in my view one of the best attacking midfielders on the planet. He has such fantastic vision and skill, and because of this Napoli are becoming one of the most feared teams in Italy. He provided the ammunition for Edinson Cavani to score during their time together.
3) Pablo Zabaleta
If I had my way, I would have put Zabaleta in the FIFPro World XI as the right back. Like Fernandinho he is one of City’s best and most underrated players. Not only does he provide many assists (the most for a defender this season) he also pops up with the occasional goal. Zabaleta could be one of the players that determine if City win the title or not.
2) Henrikh Mkhitaryan
The replacement for Mario Gotze, the Armenian international has coped very well at Dortmund so far, many in fact have forgotten about the now Bayern Munich player. Mkhitaryn doesn’t get much of the spotlight at Dortmund with the likes of Marco Reus and Robert Lewendowski at the club but he has become one of their most important players.
1) Antonio Di Natale
One of the best, if not the best, 30 plus-year old player in the world right now and one of the greatest Italian strikers of all time. This versatile player has been the driving force for Udinese for a long time now, and he just seems to be getting better with age. He plans to retire at the end the season.
