Maria Sharapova overcome a scare from Karin Knapp and the extreme heat in Melbourne to qualify for the third round of the Australian Open.
The 2008 Champion battled out a 6-4 6-3 10-8 win over Italian Knapp in temperatures of 42 degrees. The deciding set took place at the hottest point of the day and lasted for nearly two hours before the Russian came out on top.
Elsewhere Defending champion Victoria Azarenka beat Barbora Zahlavova Strycova in straight sets 6-2 6-4 to stay on course to win her third Australian Open whilst Caroline Wozniacki survived her encounter with Christina McHale to record a 6-0 1-6 6-2 victory at the Rod Laver Arena to secure her place in the third round. Azarenka will now face the winner of the Bojana Jovanovski and Yvonne Meusburger match.
Wozniacki will now play Garbine Muguruza in the third round after she overcame Anna Schmeidlova in straight sets 6-3 6-3 and Fifth seed Agniezska Radwanska booked her place in the third round with a 6-0 7-5 win over Olga Govortsova to set up a meeting with Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who got the 6-2 6-2 win over Mandy Minella before the heat forced play to be suspended.
There were also recorded second round wins for Romania's Simona Halep, American Sloane Stephens, 16th seed Carla Suarez Navarro, Solovakia's Dominika Cibulkova, French Alize Cornet, 29th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, Kazakhstan's Zarina Diyas, 8th seed Jelena Jankovic, Spanish Garbine Muguruza Blanco and Japanese Kurumi Nara.
